Oscar Winner Slams Netflix Series ‘The Crown’. Calls For Disclaimer

The widely acclaimed and big-budget historical drama Netflix series ‘The Crown’ revolves around the royal family and chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth-II from the year of her wedding until modern times. The first season of the show started streaming from the year 2016 and the penultimate Season-5 will drop on Netflix on 9th November.

Although ‘The Crown’ has consistently been praised by critics and viewers alike, at the same time, the series was also on the receiving end of criticism pertaining to its alleged historical inaccuracies.

Recently, ahead of its Season-5 premiere, Britain’s former Prime Minister John Major called ‘The Crown’ as “a barrel load of nonsense” following a report about a potentially controversial scene in the forthcoming season.

And now, Academy Award winning veteran English actress Judi Dench has expressed her concerns and has criticized the Netflix series in a candid letter to British newspaper The Times. She has criticized ‘The Crown’ series by describing it as ‘cruelly unjust’ and for its ‘crude sensationalism’.

Judi Dench has stated that “Sir John Major is not alone in his concerns that the latest series of The Crown will present an inaccurate and hurtful account of history.”

She further wrote that “No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged. Despite this week stating publicly that The Crown has always been a ‘fictionalized drama,’ the program makers have resisted all calls for them to carry a disclaimer at the start of each episode.” It remains to be seen whether her call for disclaimer will be paid heed to by the makers.

Judi Dench is quite popular globally for playing the role of the MI6 ‘head M’ in several James Bond movies including ‘Golden Eye’ and ‘Spectre’. She has been nominated eight times for an Oscar and has won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Academy Award for (ironically) essaying the role of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

The Emmy winning Netflix series ‘The Crown’ is expected to conclude in the sixth season, which will ostensibly show the events during the early 21st century period. Whereas Season-5 of ‘The Crown’ will purportedly portray the royal family’s difficult period during the early 1990s.

Following the earlier trend, the fifth season of ‘The Crown’ will see new actors portraying the lead roles of Queen Elizabeth-II, Prince Philip, and Princess Margaret. In the forthcoming season, Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debicki, and Dominic West are set to essay the roles of Queen Elizabeth-II, Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, Diana, and Charles, respectively.
