Hollywood is never short of action movies. This time around, Netflix’s new release is a promising-looking action drama ‘Lou’ led by a female star. The movie at first glance seems to be a female version of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick transported into Liam Neeson’s Taken film series.
The title character is played by Allison Janney, an Oscar-winning actress who is basically great in everything she has starred in in the recent past. This is a very different character from what she is known for. For those who are wondering where you’ve seen her but can’t remember, she was the mother nobody wants to have but who is always incredibly engaging and fun to be around in the hit TV series ‘Mom’.
Allison plays a mysterious character, who usually keeps to herself. She lives with her dog Jax in her house on a secluded island. When her neighbor’s child is kidnapped during a storm and she comes asking Lou for help, Lou gets on to tracking the kid along with her grieving yet relentless mother played by Jurnee Smollett. The events they come across on the way to get to the child while each of them battling their secrets and inner demons form the gist of the story.
The movie while looking like any other action movie we have seen seems to have heart as well. Allison looks like she’s tailor-made for the role and when she tells the much younger character to not slow her down, you know she means business. What is also refreshing is actresses over 60 getting such badass roles in mainstream movies.
While it’s a given that the critically acclaimed actress will get the emotions right, the trailer showed she is surprisingly good in action as well. Jurnee Smollett too is a well-regarded actress known for DC’s ‘Birds of Prey’ and HBO’s ‘Lovecraft Country’. Overall, the movie looks like good content to watch on a weekend after a long day at work.
With a decent 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and a promising cast, ‘Lou’ definitely looks like it’s worth checking out. Released on 23rd September, the movie is streaming now on Netflix.
