The eagerly awaited Oscars 2020 have been concluded with its usual share of surprises and some very predictable winners. The biggest surprise was Parasite, whereas the easiest pick was Best Actor.
The Oscars 2020’s biggest surprise was the Best Picture Winner. For the first time in history, an international film was accorded with the status, over the local English movies. Parasite achieved this impossible feat beating the Oscar favourite World War I epic drama, 1917.
The evening was a special one for Parasite as it also won Best Screenplay and Director Awards, as well. It was a memorable and unforgettable evening for Bong Joon Ho and the team of Parasite.
The other big winner, and also a predictable one was Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor. The actor was a hot favourite from the start for his spine-chilling portrayal of Joker. It is also the second time that an actor has won an Oscar for playing the same character. Incidentally, both happen to be Joker, from comics. It further enhances the iconicity of the comic villain.
When it came to Netflix, which had the highest nominations across different categories, it had to settle with two wins. Again, one of it was highly predictable, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern from Marriage Story. Many expected a Best Actress nod too, but Renee Zellweger bagged it for Judy. Another win for Netflix came for Barack Obama backed Documentary Feature, American Factory.
Overall, Oscar 2020 comes across as least controversial year regarding the winners. Everyone seems to be happy with the choices made by the Academy Jury. Congratulations to all the winners.
