Yesterday, we had made our readers aware about the 301 films from across the globe which passed the Oscar 2023 eligibility criteria. And amongst those, the Indian films were ‘RRR’, ‘All That Breathes’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Iravin Nizhal’, ‘Kantara’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Last Film Show’, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, and ‘Vikrant Rona’.
And now, the official Twitter handle of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the list of fifteen films which have advanced to the next round of voting for the ‘International Feature Film’ category.
And India’s official entry – Pan Nalin’s ‘Last Film Show’ aka ‘Chhello Show’ has also been named in the aforementioned list of fifteen films and in doing that, it has inched closer towards the Indian Oscar dream.
Other fourteen international films in the fifteen shortlisted titles are ‘Argentina, 1985’ (Argentina), ‘Corsage’ (Austria), ‘Close’ (Belgium), ‘Return to Seoul’ (Cambodia), ‘Holy Spider’ (Denmark), ‘Saint Omer’ (France), ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (Germany), ‘The Quiet Girl’ (Ireland), ‘Bardo’ (Mexico), ‘The Blue Caftan’ (Morocco), ‘Joyland’ (Pakistan), ‘Decision to Leave’ (South Korea), ‘EO’ (Poland), and ‘Cairo Conspiracy’ (Sweden).
Interestingly, out of the above titles, Argentina’s highly rated film ‘Argentina, 1985’ has just been awarded with the Golden Globe Award for the ‘Best Non-English Language Film’ category. And ‘Close’, ‘Decision to Leave’, and ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ were also nominated in the same category.
Coming back to the 95th Academy Awards, now all eyes will be on the final list of nominated titles for Oscars 2023 which will be announced on 24th January. And the final verdict will be out on 12th March – that’s when the Oscar Awards ceremony will be held. Can ‘Last Film Show’ win it for India? Our hopes are high, and fingers crossed.
The basic plot of ‘Last Film Show’ aka ‘Chhello Show’ follows a nine-year-old boy named Samay, who lives in a remote village in Gujarat. After discovering the magic of films, he makes it his mission to become a filmmaker himself. It’s currently streaming in India on Netflix.
