The 97th Oscars are over, and boy oh boy, people are pissed. Honestly, the latest edition of the Academy Awards turned out to be one of the most divisive in recent years. Amidst all the snubs, the one that has received the most attention from viewers is Demi Moore’s loss in the Best Actress category, which went to Mikey Madison.
Moore was among the top contenders for this year’s Best Actress Oscar. She delivered a career-best performance in The Substance, where she played Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity who, after being fired from her own show due to her age, decides to use a black-market drug that creates a younger version of herself—only to suffer terrible side effects.
A large portion of viewers strongly believe that Demi Moore deserved to win instead of Mikey Madison. The former’s odds of winning skyrocketed after she secured this season’s Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Actress. To most viewers’ surprise, the accolade went to Madison.
Madison, on the other hand, plays a young stripper in Anora, who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Her performance in Sean Baker’s Anora was splendid, and winning an Oscar at such a young age will undoubtedly boost her confidence and inspire her to take on more great roles in the future.
As for Demi Moore, Oscars 2025 will be a tough night to forget. After winning the three major awards, losing at the Academy Awards must have been a shocker. On the other hand, Madison also won the BAFTA in the same category before claiming the Oscar, meaning the odds and the majority of public support were certainly in Moore’s favour.
Earlier this year, Moore earned her first-ever Oscar nomination, despite a decades-long acting career that began in the ’80s. Fans were eager to see her finally win the accolade after so many years, but it didn’t happen.
A significant portion of fans believes that the only reason Moore didn’t win is that her work belonged to the horror genre—a genre the Academy historically doesn’t take very seriously.
