If you’re a Bengali, then “Mahanayak Uttam Kumar” lives deep within your soul, an absolute presence you can’t deny. His essence, charm, and timeless allure are entrenched within you, shaping your identity as a Bengali.
A recently released Bengali movie, “Oti Uttam” by Srijit Mukherjee, is a cinematic experience that shouldn’t be missed. It presents a unique concept that Bengali cinema hasn’t explored before. The idea has been generated in such a unique way, where Krishnendu (Anindya Sengupta) has been pursuing his PhD on the ‘Sociological Impact of the Smile of Uttam Kumar’ is really fascinating and shows a dedication to exploring the cultural significance of this evergreen figure of Tollywood.
Although the narrative initially appears ordinary, the film delves deeper than a conventional romance storyline. It follows Krishnendu (played by Anindya Sengupta), who harbours feelings for Sohini (portrayed by Roshni Bhattacharya). As a devoted fan of Uttam Kumar, Krishnendu summons the spirit of the iconic actor through a séance, aided by his friend Gourab Chatterjee, who coincidentally is Uttam’s real-life grandson. A unique twist ensues as the legendary actor’s apparition, accompanied by his grandson, becomes Krishnendu’s unconventional wingman.
Anindya Sengupta as Krishnendu (role played by Uttam Kumar in the movie “Saptapadi”) conveys charm and humour to the screen, completed by the lovely performances of the rest of the cast. Again, “Oti Uttam” pays tribute to Uttam Kumar in a way that showcases his permanent impact on Bengali cinema. Despite the challenges of combining archival footage, the film successfully catches the essence of the iconic actor’s persona.
Additionally, the music in “Oti Uttam” adds another layer of enjoyment, with catchy songs and a fitting background score that enhances the viewing experience.
It’s a film that deserves recognition for its ambition and creativity, making it a must-watch for fans of Uttam Kumar and enthusiasts of innovative storytelling alike. In every scene, in every smile, Uttam Kumar lives on, forever imprinted in the collective soul of a community that proudly declares: “Ami Bengali, ami Uttam.”
