When the world was facing one of its biggest catastrophes in 2020, one industry benefited a lot during this. This is the OTT industry, that houses the streaming giants and our extremely favourites Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ along with other Indian home-grown streaming platforms. This growth has been calculated to be one of the most beneficial in the last year. As other industries saw severe losses, OTT was one such industry that not only kept its power intact but in fact grew even more.
It is being said by the experts that India has been the highest consumer of the content in the past year than any other country. An average Indian apparently spends roughly 5 hours a day on their smartphone, which is followed by China with 4.5 hours. With this much hours being spent only on content, it most definitely will attract more international streaming platforms towards the country. But how can a streaming platform keep a country with these much diversity still engaged in its contents is a big question.
London based business research analysis and consultancy firms have apparently released reports that streaming giants Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ together has put a whopping amount of Rs. 2824.9 crores into developing regional content for the country alone. This is way higher than the amount that the home-grown streaming platforms have invested which is approximately Rs. 2080 crore. The analysis research company also has put forward the statement that India has become and will become a very important market for the OTT industry in the coming years.
Regional and original content is one of the biggest focus for streaming platforms, be it the international giants or the home-grown masters. This will be the biggest turning point for streaming platforms this year it seems. To have content that people enjoy and to have content that will show the diversity of the country in a manner that people get attracted more towards it. It will be a big game.
It can only be found, as we further go into the year. We already have an array of films and series that will be releasing this year; it will be interesting to see who matches up to the expectations and who comes up on the top.
Till then, let’s not get bothered by these huge numbers and enjoy the content that is being provided to us thoroughly.
