In recent years, a few OTT platforms have emerged which dedicate themselves to creating sexual content. The most prominent among these are Ullu and ALT Balaji. ALT Balaji, which is a platform from Balaji Productions owned by Ekta Kapoor, gained a lot of notoriety for its long running web series Gandi Baat.
Another controversy has recently been built upon the series as a case has been registered against Ekta and her mother Shobha. The mother and daughter have been charged with POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences). The case has been filed as the series allegedly has an episode that shows inappropriate scenes that involve minor children. The episode in question was aired on ALT Balaji between February and April 2021. The episode is currently unavailable to stream on the platform.
The case was registered against Balaji Telefilms and Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor at MHB police station Mumbai under section 295-A of IPC, IT Act and Sections 13 and 15 of POCSO.
This case is just an example of the many problems that arise with such platforms. Promoting incest and adultery, glorifying aggressiveness and masculine toxicity, showcasing children indulging in sexual activities are some of the issues.
These platforms in a way distribute adult content that is censored to be streamed legally. A bleak line separates these contents from pornography. Hence the content is made available to everyone with a subscription and many people get affected by the content it provides.
Many complaints have already been made about such platforms but this time the charge is quite big. Hopefully the upcoming regulatory acts against OTT will discourage the distribution of such contents.
