These past few years we saw a lot of web series that changed the game for everyone in India when any one talks about web shows and limited Indian series. First of all, we were all really deprived of good shows for a very long time and almost all of the shows that were available to us were sappy daily soaps and stories that just didn’t sit well with us anymore. This is when the audience started turning towards content from the west. When someone says, we have a lot of western influence coming in from those shows; we can’t be blamed because we had nothing interesting to watch.
Then came the shows that changed the game for Indian shows altogether. The entry of Sacred Games, Mirzapur, The Family Man, Paatol Lok started coming in one after the other and there was no looking back anymore for us. The shows gave us memorable characters that will stay with us for a very very long time, surely. The shows started a cult following to be honest in India. A new age cult following where the shows were web based and no more from the TV.
The major change we saw in these shows as an audience that big screen actors were doing the roles. They were doing a show that was episodic and were limited in number, which pulled our attention even more to those as it was fascinating for us to see those actors in such series. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays the famous Ganesh Gaitonde in one of the most brilliant web series Sacred Games, mentioned in one of the interviews that how in this OTT world, it’s the character that leaves the impact and not the actor who plays it.
This stands absolutely true when you give a thought to it. Almost all of the characters that hit the jackpot in the world of OTT are not those “A-List” actors. They are just actors, brilliant ones in fact who played the role and now are basking in its glory. OTT has successfully broken the so-called Bollywood “lists” and has given equal chances to everyone irrespective of the factor, how famous one is in Indian Cinema. Like Siddiqui said, it’s the character that leaves the impact and the audience will definitely know when a character is here to make an impact.
