Subtitle errors have become synonymous with OTTs for some time now, especially since major streaming platforms started releasing more and more content regularly since the global pandemic “took off” last year. While subtitle errors vary from platform to platform, one thing has become very clear – the Quality Control (QC) Teams of these OTT platforms need a major upgrade. This week’s subtitle issue comes from Amazon Prime Video‘s latest original film, ‘Udanpirappe’, which has its unique subtitle problem.
Jyothika‘s 50th film, ‘Udanpirappe‘ is a movie that is not worth mentioning. A non-existent plotline, too many non-ignorable plot holes and way too many moral messages. Out of this mess, subtitle issues are the film’s smallest problem. The subtitle issue of this Tamil film is quite small – whenever a character on-screen says the word “Super”, it gets translated into “Scooper”. So, not as big a problem, when compared to other subtitle disasters over the past months. But, it is a noticeable problem, especially since the word is repeated regularly for the issue to be noted.
Amazon Prime Video hasn’t been the only platform that has had subtitle problems. SonyLIV, Disney+ Hotstar and even Netflix have shown this problem and not just in regional films either. Hollywood films too are translated wrong sometimes and with International content such as ‘Squid Game’ and ‘The Money Heist’ also facing major subtitle problems, now is the time for OTT platforms to invest in their QC team. Getting a general linguistic expert should be a good start for any streaming platform to be ahead of the curve.
