OTT platforms have been in doubt for quite some time. Because, on a very frequent basis, we get to know some buzz around the upcoming regulation. But as of now, there hasn’t been any such crucial step. However, it is very very important for OTT platforms to keep themselves in control otherwise what may follow will restrict several creative liberties.
In recent news, the Digital Media Content Regulatory Council (DMCRC) has kind of scolded OTT platforms for vulgar content. DMCRC’s chairperson, Justice (retired) Mukul Mudgal, has emphasized the need for these platforms to stay within self-regulatory boundaries and to be mindful of the diverse sensibilities present in our society and culture.
Several prominent OTT platforms, including Disney+Hotstar, Zee5, SonyLIV, Jio Cinema, and others, are members of the DMCRC. These platforms have been at the forefront of providing an array of content that appeals to a wide audience. While they enjoy creative freedom, the recent directives from DMCRC underscore the importance of exercising that freedom responsibly.
The essence of content self-regulation lies in ensuring that while OTT platforms can tell stories in their own unique way, they do so with due diligence and responsibility. The call to avoid unnecessary vulgarity and abusive content without justification is a significant step.
