The enormously talented Indian actor Vikram, who was last seen on the big screen in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, is all set to star in another period drama film titled ‘Thangalaan’. Directed by ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ helmer Pa. Ranjith, ‘Thangalaan’ is slated for a theatrical release on 26th January 2024. And earlier today, the makers unveiled the first teaser for the much-anticipated Tamil language film.
‘Thangalaan’ teaser showcases Vikram in a never-seen-before and unrecognizable avatar. His rugged and strong character is able to kill a snake with his bare hands. There is a lot of bloodshed and brutal battle scenes. The film’s teaser suggests that the audience will be in for a grand but violent visual experience, a power-packed performance by veteran actor Vikram and another gem by filmmaker Pa. Ranjith, who has delivered hits like ‘Kabali’, ‘Kaala’, and ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’. Overall, it looks like a bloody good film. But let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Set amidst the backdrop of the early years of the 19th Century, the underlying plot of ‘Thangalaan’ ostensibly revolves around the real-life incidents which happened with the lives of mine workers working in the Kolar Gold Fields aka KGF. It narrates the story of the fight between the native people and foreign forces over the land. It’s being described as a fiery story of a bygone era. Vikram has essayed the titular role in the movie. Besides Vikram, ‘Thangalaan’ also features Malavika Mohanan and Parvathy Thiruvothu in important roles.
Previously, the Kolar Gold Fields also became the backdrop of the blockbuster Kannada film ‘KGF 1’ and its sequel ‘KGF 2’. But the KGF film series and Pa. Ranjith and Vikram’s ‘Thangalaan’ are drastically different. While the KGF films were masala entertainers with over-the-top action sequences, ‘Thangalaan’, on the other hand, looks like a more realistic film with a strong emotional core. But both films have been mounted on a big scale. At first, making another film on Kolar Gold Mines sounded like a risky project, but after the teaser, it looks like Pa. Ranjith and Vikram have another blockbuster on the cards.
