After the not-so-well received ‘The Last Airbender’, another Avatar film is set to come to theatres. Paramount released its 2025 release dates and one of the major surprises is the yet-untitled animated Avatar movie. As of now, the movie is set for release on October 10, 2025.
The project is one of the three announced, which are to be set in the Avatar universe and to be produced by the recently founded Avatar Studios, along with Paramount and Nickelodeon. The creators of the Nickelodeon animated series Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko created the animation studio to expand the worlds of the main series and its sequel ‘The Legend of Korra’. While we know little about the films’ stories, as per reports, the 2025 film has already found its director. Lauren Montgomery, who worked on ‘The Last Airbender’ and Netflix’s ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ will be directing the film.
The original ‘Avatar’ series ran from 2005 to 2008 on Nickelodeon, with ‘The Legend of Korra’ continuing its story from 2012 to 2014. The show gets its title from the mystical Avatar, a person who can master all four of the main elements- fire, water, earth, and air and is reborn every generation upon the death of his predecessor. The series follows Ang, the current generation’s Avatar as he learns to master all four elements to defeat the Fire Nation and protect his friends Katara, Sokka, and Toph and bring times of peace back to the world.
Besides the animated films, Netflix is also developing a live-action TV series of the animated show, with the production having concluded in June 2022, and release date yet to be announced. With multiple projects, it seems to be a good time to be an Avatar fan. It is however hoped that the announced projects are well made and do not end up as disappointments to both fans and neutral audiences, like M Night Shyamalan’s 2011 live-action film.
