It was definitely becoming a trend that OTT platforms would get a big share of sports streaming, but IMAX has other plans. The flames of the Olympic torch will now light up the big screens as well, benefiting both parties, especially considering the Olympics’ popularity.
IMAX is already a system with a hefty price tag, and not all movies can afford an IMAX release. Though its popularity is increasing, adding some sports content can definitely give it a boost. IMAX will likely have a busy schedule with the Olympics, which should prove profitable for the company.
However, there’s a big ‘IF’ in this deal, as IMAX will only be showing the opening ceremony of the event. Still, it’s a significant deal for theaters, as screening the biggest sporting event is always prestigious.
This outcome is also the result of a deal between NBC and IMAX. The event will start on Friday, July 26, and will be available on television, but this move marks a departure from tradition for both the Olympics and IMAX.
“We look forward to providing our Opening Ceremony coverage to audiences at IMAX locations across the country, sharing in this historic moment as the world regathers to witness the spectacular beginning of 16 days of athletic greatness against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world,” said Gary Zenkel, NBC President.
Departing from tradition, the ceremony will unfold along the River Seine, showcasing a four-mile-long flotilla carrying athletes from over 200 countries, culminating in a grand finale at the Trocadéro. NBC’s coverage will reach over 150 IMAX venues in the US.
For the global audience, unfortunately, they won’t be able to watch it in IMAX, but some national theaters might take the initiative. In India, it could be INOX, which took a similar initiative during the World Cup 2023, so don’t be surprised if the same happens during the Olympics.
