The notorious ‘Oldboy’ is going to have an English web series adaptation soon. Park Chan-Wook, the director and writer of the original film himself is developing the project and will also be producing it.
‘Oldboy’ came out in 2003 and it was an adaptation of a manga written by Garon Tsuchiya. It told the story of a man who is imprisoned by an unknown man and is kept inside a vault for fifteen years. After these fifteen years, the man is freed and he is given five days to find the man who destroyed these long years of his life. In his quest the protagonist makes some discoveries that he wishes he would not have made. The movie had already been adapted for big screens in 2013. Spike Lee directed the movie and Josh Brolin starred as the mentally scarred imprisoned man. The movie was accepted with good reviews. Initially Spielberg and Will Smith were willing to make a remake of Oldboy but then Lee and Josh Brolin pulled it off quite smoothly. But a web series adaptation is definitely going to go a lot deeper into the psyche of the protagonist (and the antagonist) and it is also going to be a lot darker. Park Chan-Wook’s association with the project makes it more trust-worthy.
The show is being developed for Lionsgate and Chan-Wook has expressed his excitement on working with the platform. Lionsgate officials have said, “This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and visceral style that made the film a classic.”
