Betaal had its world streaming premiere today (May 24th). However, in the last couple of days, the makers have to meet a legal hurdle unexpectedly.
Two Marathi writers, Sameer Wadekar and Mahesh Goswami, have filed a plagiarism case against the makers of Betaal. They allege that the makes of Betaal have lifted the plot from their zombie movie Vetaal.
The writers wanted a stay of streaming of the show Betaal. However, the court has quashed their petition as far as a stay of the show is concerned. The distinguished judge looked at three key aspects to come to a conclusion. They are no prior contact established between the two parties, the delay in filing the complaint, and finally the concept of Vetaal itself, which is situated in Hindu mythology.
The good news for the writers, though is they get a detailed look into the plagiarism charges. It will be done once their script and the content of the show are checked for any close similarities.
Betaal is the new web series from Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production. Patrick Graham of Ghoul fame is the creator of the show. It is streaming on Netflix from May 24th.
