Oberyn Martell. Javier Pena. The Mandalorian. Unbelievably, Pedro Pascal has played them all on-screen – and made them some of the most iconic television characters ever shown in the 2010s. Benedict Cumberbatch has brought some iconic characters to the screen in the 2010s and so has Robert Downey Jr. – however, Cumberbatch has portrayed his characters on both the small screen and the big screen, while RDJ has stuck primarily to the big screen. And while they (arguably) have a bigger global reach, Pedro Pascal’s aforementioned onscreen performances has helped in making those shows even more popular. So it makes sense that he has been chosen to play another iconic character, Joel, in HBO’s live-action TV adaptation of the brilliant post-apocalyptic game series, ‘Last of Us’.
Pedro Pascal had made many guest and half-season appearances in hit shows like ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘The Mentalist’, but he landed his first (and probably his most) iconic TV role as Oberyn Martell on the biggest TV show on the planet (at the time), ‘Game of Thrones’. While the actor only got to be a part of the show for one season, those ten episodes propelled his career to newer and greater heights.
He went on to play Javier Pena, a DEA agent in Columbia trying to catch the biggest cocaine distributor of all time, Pablo Escobar. While his character wasn’t as well known as Oberyn, Pedro was playing the role of the real-life Javier Pena, and his performance is noteworthy. Then, of course, came ‘The Mandalorian’ – Pedro Pascal’s brilliant Star Wars appearance. The premise was good as is, but Pascal made the show even better – that too, without even showing his face for almost 99% of his screen time.
It will be interesting to see what Pedro will bring to the upcoming ‘Last of Us’, but judging from his previous TV work – we expect another iconic character to make it on-screen; Pascal’s first of the 2020s. The web series is expected to drop this year and we can’t wait.
