Peter Morgan, Netflix’s The Crown creator, has revealed that his next project would be a prequel if he decides to continue the series after Season 6. This prequel project would explore the events that took place before Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Morgan recently spoke to Variety and discussed his plans after The Crown Season 6’s release on Netflix. The creator did not go deep into this matter, but he did tease the possibility of a prequel project.
This is what Morgan said:
“I do have an idea. But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together. Yes. If I were to go back into ‘The Crown’, it would definitely be to go back in time.”
The showrunner did not reveal plot details about the prequel project. However, some reports have disclosed that it may explore the reigns of the kings who came after Queen Victoria, who died in 1901. This gives Morgan a perfect opportunity to concentrate on the major events that significantly impacted the royal family from 1901 to 1947. Both World Wars left a profound impact on the nation as well as on the family.
We can also witness the events that led to King Edward VII’s abdication in 1936. He fell in love with Wallis Simpson, a divorcee, and decided to give up his throne to marry her. The royal family did not accept his decision and chose King George VI as his successor.
As it entered the 1940s, The British Empire’s power started declining. This scenario left the royal family with no alternative but to accept the dissolution of the empire and the evolving global status of Britain.
All these events could be explored in The Crown prequel project. The original show focuses on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, her reign, and the lives of members of the royal family from 1947 to the present day. Its final season will arrive in late 2023. The first part will arrive on Netflix on November 16 and the second one on December 14. Stay tuned for more updates.
