Disney Plus’ live-action Peter Pan remake ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ has received abysmally low audience ratings on review aggregating portal Rotten Tomatoes. The film has garnered a low 13% audience score on RottenTomatoes, making it the worst-rated live-action Disney movie of all time. Interestingly, critics have given Peter Pan & Wendy a decent rating, taking it to a far better 64% critics’ score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.
But it’s not only about low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has also been the subject of brutal review-bombing, with audiences logging on to Rotten Tomatoes and leaving extremely critical and strongly negative reviews for Peter Pan & Wendy. As per industry watchers, the critical reviews are being posted by right-wing audiences, who are pissed off at Disney for choosing Yara Shahidi, who is black, to play Tinker Bell, a blond and blue-eyed character n the original. Apparently, the choice of a person of colour (POC) for the crucial role has triggered right-wing types to negatively review-bomb the movie on both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
While IMDb hasn’t done anything about the obviously agenda-driven avalanche of negative reviews, Rotten Tomatoes has taken an intriguing step, unprecedented in its entire history, as far as we know. For the first time ever, Rotten Tomatoes has removed the audience ratings for Peter Pan & Wendy from its website, while retaining the critics score as it is.
This is not the first time that Disney content has been review bombed with negative reviews. Disney Plus show Ms Marvel was similarly given brutal reviews, apparently for having an Asian actor play superhero, along with a dominant Asian cast. Lightyear was also severely trolled, for the LGBT character in the narrative.
