Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series is moving forward at Amazon. The series was announced first in January last year. Head of Amazon and MGM Studios, Jen Salke, disclosed the news at the company’s recent Upfront event. She hailed the upcoming Prime Video series as “epic” and “globe-trotting.”
Waller-Bridge will serve as the series’ writer and producer. The Fleabag fame has no interest in starring in it. No actress has been finalized yet for the role of Lara Croft. A global casting search will commence soon for the live-action portrayal of the protagonist of the Tomb Raider video game series.
Angelina Jolie first played the live-action version of the character in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), and its sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). Both films failed to impress the critics, with the 2003 sequel emerging as a financial disaster, earning only $160 million globally against its $90 million budget. Although, the 2001 entry was a decent financial success with a worldwide collection of $274.7 million.
Alicia Vikander played the iconic character in the rebooted Tomb Raider (2018) movie, helmed by Roar Uthaug. It was a decent box office success ($274 million globally) with a moderate critical reception of 53% (based on 327 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.
Prime Video has not yet disclosed the release date of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series. Stay tuned for more updates.
