Team ‘Pippa’ has issued an apology letter in the social media after facing huge backlash for using a famous Nazrulgeeti in the film.
‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’, is a popular Bengali song written and composed by poet, author, and revolutionary Kazi Nazrul Islam. The song is one of the canonical pieces essential to the Bengali identity and is sung and played with great reverence. A. R. Rahman, the composer of ‘Pippa’, has changed the original tune of the song, which was unsettling to the regular listeners. The protest was mostly from Bengal and audiences complained against the ‘murder of the soul of the song’. Not only did they disapprove of the ‘slow, romantic tune’ for a fiery, revolutionary song, but also asked for limits to be drawn in the case of creative liberty. For non-Bengali audiences, it was indeed a refreshing song and a nice tune.
RSVP, the production house for ‘Pippa’ has clarified that they had had all the copyrights to the song and the composition was faithful to the deal signed with Late Mrs. Kalyani Kazi. They have also expressed respect for the original composition, and Najrul himself, for his massive contributions to the musical, social and political landscape in India.
RSVP has stated that the sentimental bond that audiences have with the song is totally understandable and the production house never meant to hurt those sentiments. The intention of making the song was to pay a homage.
Audiences need to take everything less personally and accept the changes in the cultural sphere; it is because of this composition that the whole of India is now getting to know it. And at the same time, the makers too have to keep in mind what boundaries they should never cross. But, after all, the original composition is, no doubt, better than Rahman’s recent creation.
