The trailer of the highly anticipated Ponniyin Selvan was released last night. After a tiring and annoying delay of over 5 hours, the makers finally released the trailer which is good enough to excite the audience.
About a month ago when the teaser dropped then it was not very well received. The color grades were pathetic and it needed a serious editing tweak. Looks like the makers heard those demands and worked upon them. They used several snaps which were also used in the teaser but with a far superior quality. It seems to be working out as we are getting a comparatively better response.
However, the reception of the trailer is not as bonkers as it was in the case of Brahmāstra. There is always this problem with period dramas; film editors tend to tint the screen with a brownish or yellowish color. It is overused and doesn’t make much sense in 2022.
Consider Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. One of the major factors, the movie was breathtakingly beautiful were the vibrant colors. They didn’t spoil the mood of watching a period drama and came out to be exceptional.
This same approach was used in RRR. But yet again we saw the yellowish tint in Prithviraj and some other movies which failed to leave an impact. The masses never watch a movie due to good “editing” but those factors really work while watching it on big screens.
Regardless, it is not just about the colors but also the overall trailer cut which is average. The trailer fails to tempt the audience and doesn’t introduce us to a big problem that would snap our excitement.
But, the scale is undoubtedly grand and so are the visuals. When it comes to presenting visual beauty then Mani Ratnam is one of the finest directors in the country and he has proved it yet again.
So the hype was worth it but it didn’t completely extinguish the desire to watch a magnum opus epic.
Let’s hope the movie fills all the void.
