Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ was finally released in theatres last Friday alongside Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘Vikram Vedha’. And both these films had made their way to more than 500 theatres in the US territory.
As per the weekend box office figures by a reputed portal, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ has made it to the top ten movies list during 30th September to 2nd October weekend period in the US. To be precise, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ is on the sixth place and has grossed over an impressive $4 million at the US box office.
The weekend’s top grossing movie was Parker Finn’s psychological horror movie ‘Smile’, followed by ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ and ‘Woman King’. While ‘Vikram Vedha’ managed to garner around $1 million and held the eleventh place.
However, one interesting fact about the US box-office weekend figures for ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ is that the Indian film has registered the highest box office per screen output of a whopping $8036 per theatre and is much ahead of its American counterparts in that respect. The second highest ‘dollar per screen’ count has been achieved by ‘Smile’ ($6035 per screen). And ‘Vikram Vedha’ has attained box-office output of $1816 per screen.
Globally, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ has purportedly grossed over a formidable Rs.230 crores at the box-office in just three days since its theatrical release. The film is expected to breach the coveted Rs.250-crore mark worldwide by today’s end.
‘Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1’ is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name and chronicles the account of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Directed by maestro filmmaker Mani Ratnam, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Prakash Raj, amongst others.
