The first part of Mani Ratnam’s epic two-part Tamil Magnum opus period drama Ponniyin Selvan, which boasts of the fantastic ensemble of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi, is all set to release on September 30 this year.
Along with Tamil, the film is also being released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada. After the stupendous success of Bahubali part 1 and 2, RRR (2022), and KGF: Part 2 (2022), in Hindi market with it’s Hindi dubbed version, Mani Ratnam’s epic period saga, which is made on a toppling budget of 240 crores (two parts combined), seems to have missed the golden opportunity to emerge as the next big pan Indian hit. as sadly there is hardly any buzz in the Hindi market about this film due to the the lackluster promotional strategy,
The makers have already begun the promotion in Tamil Nadu with major cast members, but surprisingly, the film lacks the buzz in Hindi as well as other regional languages, despite having only nine days for its release.
Apart from the lackluster promotional strategy, another big problem that has created the hindrance in allowing Ponniyin Selvan emerge as the next big hit in Indian cinema is the mixed response to the film’s trailer. With such big budget period epics, the trailer plays a huge role in creating the buzz for the film among the common cinegoers, but the trailer has failed to tempt the audience to get excited about the film.
Another reason behind the film not getting its deserving hype is the Hindi audience’s unfamiliarity to its many cast members and also with the film’s subject matter. Although Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi are big stars and popular names in Tamilnadu, except Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, common Hindi cinegoers are not familiar with these stars and their stardom.
Add to that, the Hindi audience is also unaware about the popularity of the writer Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel with the same title, on which this two part epic period saga is based on.
Even music maestro A.R. Rahman who has worked with Mani Ratnam for past 30 years, has done15 film albums, and composed innumerable chartbusters for Mani Ratnam’s films, has failed to recreate the same magic again for Ponniyin Selvan as none of the songs that have been released so far got the same kind of popularity especially in north Indian states.
The last but another important reason behind Ponniyin Selvan missing out on the opportunity to emerge as the next big pan Indian hit, is their clash with Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan starrer one of the most awaited film of the year Vikram Vedha, which is also a remake of the Tamil film of the same title. There was already a buzz around this film as it marked Hrithik’s return to the big screen after three years, and the positive response to the film’s trailer has only added to the film’s hype, which has made things even more difficult to Ponniyan Selvan in Hindi.
