Netflix has pulled off a stunner – or should we say, coup? The streaming giant has grabbed the post-theatrical streaming rights of the buzzy ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’.
In acquiring the streaming rights for Pushpa 2, Netflix has pulled off a smart power play of sorts, and has also hoodwinked Prime Video India into losing at its own game. Streaming giant Netflix has grabbed the post-theatrical streaming rights of one of the most exciting and eagerly awaited films of 2024 – right from under Prime Video’s nose! Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule is certainly a massive catch for Netflix India.
Regular digital viewers will recall that Prime Video had pulled off a grand success when it had bought the post-theatrical streaming rights for Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa’. The film had caused quite a controversy then, by streaming quite early on Prime Video India – just 21 days after its theatrical release. Film bodies had accused the producers of jeopardising the theatre business by giving in to the big money offered by Prime Video for such an early OTT release for Pushpa.
However, Pushpa had paid huge dividends for Prime Video then. The film was a blockbuster on Prime Video, both in Telugu and in Hindi. The streaming platform also gained a huge number of new subscribers, owing to Pushpa’s release on its platform.
That the streamer would let go of Pushpa’s sequel, ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’, so easily is indeed surprising. Just like it hosts both blockbuster KGF movies, one would expect that Prime Video India would also like to be the home of both Pushpa movies. But looks like it is not to be.
Netflix must have done a whole lot of scheming and maneuvering to pick up the streaming rights of Pushpa 2: The Rule. Or maybe, after the glittering worldwide success of RRR on Netflix, Telugu fiimmakers trust Netflix more than Prime Video to push big Telugu movies into the global limelight.
Whatever be the reason, the streaming rights of Pushpa 2: The Rule are a huge gain for Netflix, and a crushing loss for Prime Video.
It’s 1-0 for Netflix vs Prime Video at the start of 2024!
