Prime Video has grabbed the streaming rights for the buzzy Korean drama, ‘Island’. The eagerly anticipated fantasy series ‘Island’ will most likely premiere worldwide on Prime Video in December this year. The series will premiere in South Korea on local streamer TVING.
Taking a leaf out of Netflix’s book, Amazon Prime Video is doubling down on its library of Korean dramas. As dedicated followers of OTT entertainment will know, Netflix is the undisputed leader when it comes to compelling Korean content, aka ‘K-dramas’. Now, Netflix’s primary rivals Disney Plus and Prime Video are following suit, and grabbing Korean series as fast as they can lay their hands on them.
Prime Video premiered a bunch of Korean dramas on its platform in the last couple of years. They were not roaring successes, but it was at least a start. Now, with its acquisition of the buzzy and hotly anticipated fantasy-action series, ‘Island’, Prime Video hopes to set things right on that count.
Island is a fantasy and action drama, set in the backdrop of Korean island, Jeju Island. The protagonists in ‘Island’ must face off against and defeat evil forces trying to destroy the world. ‘Island’ stars top Korean stars, Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo and Sung-joon in lead roles. The series is directed by Bae Jong, and written by Oh Bo-hyin.
‘Island’ is adapted from the wildly popular comic and webtoon of the same name by Yoon In-wan and Yang Kyung-il. The comics were first published in 1997, created by the two well-known Korean artists, Yoon and Yang. The comics were instant hits upon release. The comics became a popular webtoon on Naver in 2016, upon which it found new fans and renewed popularity.
