It was with great fanfare that Prime Video announced the streaming of all 25 James Bond movies on its platform. India was one of the first markets where the James Bond movie series began streaming on Prime Video – on 18th December, 2021, which is one year ago. The James Bond movies began streaming on Prime Video in most markets of the world quite late – only this year, in October 2022.
Even then, the USP of streaming the James Bond series on Prime Video, as touted by the platform itself, was the allure of having all the 25 Bond films under one roof. It was a delight for fans of the genre and franchise.
But alas, the joy has been shortlived for James Bond fans in India. For, all 25 James Bond movies have left Prime Video India, starting this Saturday, 17th December. This means, the James Bond movies were only meant to be available on Prime Video India for a year. Now that a year is up, Bond….James Bond is gone from Prime Video India.
It’s true that Amazon Prime Video had conveyed at the start that the James Bond franchise will be available for streaming on its platform for a limited time only. The primary reason is that James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson exercise tight control over the property, including its streaming pattern, MGM Studios’ ownership notwithstanding.
But then what about Amazon Prime Video’s tall claims of having all the James Bond movies under one canopy – the canopy that is the Prime Video library? Doesn’t the leaving of James Bond movies from the platform make its claims go kaput?
All said and done, the fact remains that all 25 James Bond movies are gone from Prime Video India. And they’re not available to stream on any other platform too. Hard luck, folks!
For the uninitiated, Amazon Prime Video acquired the legendary MGM Studios back in 2021, for the eye-popping sum of $8.5 billion. MGM Studios has also been the home of the James Bond franchise since the first movie in the series, thus giving Amazon Prime Video rights to the franchise.
