Analysis:
It has not been a very good month for Amazon Prime Video and there were few significant originals released this month. The platform continues to release a plethora of licensed films and does not do much about originals. ‘Bawaal’ by Nitish Tiwari is the only original film released in July and it has got mixed responses. It gathered some cold responses to the WW2 references but is a watchable film after all. Same goes with the two original shows of Prime Video this month. The first season of ‘Adhura’ is a pretty good supernatural thriller, but nothing extraordinary. ‘Sweet Kaaram Coffee’ is just as sweet as the name. The Tamil family drama is a beautiful feel good tale with three women from generations all living their lives in the same house.
In the licensed films, there are some very good films and some, on the other hand, quite insignificant. But the mere presence of a few good films will not do good to the platform. A platform grows with the originals it delivers, and Prime Video India has not delivered something profound in July.
Instead of having so much focus on licensed films, Amazon Prime Video should release original movies more often. And at the same time, it should try to enrich the quality of the shows that it produces. We can give the platform a 4/10 for this month’s performance.
