Amazon Prime Video has hit on a novel strategy to monetise its most loved original titles such as ‘The Marvellous Mrs Maisel’, ‘Coming 2 America’ and ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’. The streaming giant will license out its original programming, including both films and TV shows, to platforms outside of its own Prime Video streaming service.
Amazon Prime Video has created an entirely new division under its Amazon Prime – MGM aegis, to conduct the licensing of titles seamlessly. The new division is called Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, and it will help Amazon Prime Video to license out its popular titles. The new division is headed by Chris Ottinger, who is currently the head of distribution at MGM. Along with Prime Video content, Ottinger will continue to oversee distribution of MGM’s new releases as well as prestigious film franchises such as the James Bond and Rocky series.
The new Amazon MGM Studios Distribution outfit will leverage Amazon Prime Video’s integration with MGM, and will take advantage of the existing team to expand business in ways that will greatly benefit their customers around the world, as per Amazon and MGM Studios head, Jen Salke.
The new initiative is Amazon Prime Video’s first major move to monetise its flagship content, and also leverage MGM’s vast library to create new revenue streams in a highly competitive global streaming market.
