A few seconds into the trailer we see Aishwarya Lekshmi‘s Ammu revealing to her mother that her husband hit her. Her mother’s response? She asks Ammu what she did that led him to hit her. And that sets the premise for the movie. It’s not just about domestic abuse but also how society, even close ones indirectly help the abuser not only get away with it but also corner the abused.
From the trailer, ‘Ammu‘ promises to be a story of domestic abuse with shades of the thriller genre. What happens when a person is pushed to the brink of their patience and ability to suffer? What happens when the hunter becomes the hunted? Ammu is just that. It may be very easy to dismiss this film as the Telugu ‘Darlings’ with both seemingly having a similar story. Hopefully, the film will surprise us. And in Karthik Subbaraj as creative producer we trust.
Ammu is your normal girl who dreams of life as what she thinks it will be and not what it really is. She gets married to her neighbor (Naveen Chandra). While all seems good, we soon find out it is not so. Her thoughts on marriage being a fairy tale change when her cop-husband Ravi hits her for the very first time. What Ammu thought was a one-off incident turned into a never-ending cycle of abuse, trapping her and breaking her soul and spirit. Pushed to her limits, Ammu teams up with an unlikely ally to break free, played by National Award winner Simha.
While the teaser doesn’t really show much, we get to see a brilliant Aishwarya Lekshmi in the trailer. She shines in the emotional moments and as the soft-spoken and dreamy newlywed. The movie is written & directed by Charukesh Sekar and is produced by Kalyan Subramaniam and Kaarthekeyen Santhanam. The Prime Original is set to release on October 19th.
