After charging really high prices for its rent, Prime Video has finally made ‘Bad Newz’ available for subscribers almost after two weeks. ‘Bad Newz’ was initially on rent at ₹349 which was later reduced to ₹279, that still was too much to ask for a mid budget film like ‘Bad Newz’.
Anyways, the rent prices do not matter anymore for those subscribed to Prime Video. Those who didn’t get a chance to catch it in theatres and were eagerly waiting for the film’s digital debut can now binge it this weekend or whenever they like.
Now the real question is, are people still excited for the film? Well, not so much. The eight week gap window is already long enough and this staggered release format followed by Prime Video (first on rent and then on SVOD) is often a discouraging thing and most of the titles lose steam in the process.
Although the release pattern adapted by Prime Video falls within the eight week standard for Hindi films (on rent after 6 weeks and after 2 more weeks for subscribers), it’s like tempting a child with too expensive a chocolate and that too for so long that it does not have any interest in it anymore.
‘Bad Newz’ trailer garnered a lot of attention and people were excited for the film’s release in theatres but when a film makes its way to OTT, it is nothing less than a re-release and the excitement prevails if it performs well at the box office.
‘Bad Newz’ falls in this very category, but with so many other titles having released in theatres and on streaming platforms in between, that were more attractive, the film seems to have faded away in the background. Will Prime Video and makers be able to create enough buzz for the film once again and attract viewers? Or will ‘Bad Newz’ fall flat on its digital debut?
