Prime Video is one of the most popular streaming services in India. The platform has a huge subscriber base and India is easily going to get bigger. Although not all the time, they know what the masses want and create originals that appeal to them.
Right now, Prime Video is expanding to reach even more people in Asia. They have some interesting plans for the future. Kelly Day, Amazon Prime Video’s VP for the International market, recently talked about some exciting news. She said they might show ads to make their service cheaper.
When it comes to making new shows and movies, she mentioned that they’ve been supporting 280 different shows made by local creators from 25 countries since early 2022. They’re really focusing on Japan, India, and Korea in Asia. They’re not cutting down on spending but instead trying new things, so they don’t have to do everything by themselves.
Local content is a big deal in countries like Korea, Japan, and India for streaming services. In these places, most of the stuff people watch is made right there.
Streaming services with a ton of local content are doing really well in these countries. But there’s a concern about India because the cost of making content there is going up. It’s expected to jump from $5.5 billion in 2023 to around $10 billion in 2028. This increase is mostly because they’re spending a lot on sports content, which will be about 30% of their spending. In comparison, Korea’s spending on content will only go up a bit, from $4.8 billion in 2023 to $5.9 billion in 2028.
Not only that, companies like Warner Bros Discovery also want to be part of India’s entertainment scene. The CEO and President of Warner Bros Discovery, JB Perrette, talked about their plan for India. They noticed that even though they spend a lot on making content in India, they don’t make as much money as they’d like from each user. So, instead of starting their own streaming service in India, they want to team up with others and let them use their content. They want to make sure they earn a profit in India over the next three to five years. Currently, Warner Bros content is available on JioCinema but some shows are also streaming on Prime Video.
In the end, the mix of Prime Video and India is a perfect match for streaming entertainment. With big plans for the future and a focus on delivering great content to a wide audience, this partnership is changing the entertainment world in India.
