In a fantastic update for fans of Disney’s ‘National Treasure’ film series, Nicolas Cage might soon return to star in the long-awaited sequel. Jerry Bruckheimer, who had produced the first two National Treasure movies, has given a big update about ‘National Treasure 3’ – that the sequel is still in the works.
During a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which has been produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, he was asked about the possibility of teaming up again with Nicolas Cage. His reply was affirmative: “Absolutely. I love Nicolas, he’s a brilliant actor and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure.”
Although this is surprising because last month, during another AMA session on Reddit, Nicolas Cage didn’t sound very hopeful for a third National Treasure film. Regarding the possibility of ‘National Treasure 3’, he had stated that “No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not.”
Nevertheless, Bruckheimer’s words must feel like music to the ears of all those loyal fans who have been waiting for almost 15 years for a ‘National Treasure’ sequel. Talks about a third installment cropped up right after the second film ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets’ came out in 2007. Years later in January 2020, ‘Bad Boys for Life’ writer Chris Bremner was roped in to pen the sequel’s new script for Disney.
Few months later in May 2020, Jerry Bruckheimer had announced that besides ‘National Treasure 3’, a Disney+ series was also under development that would carry forward the story concept of the film series, albeit with a younger cast. The Disney+ series is being directed by the globally renowned Indian origin filmmaker Mira Nair and its filming commenced earlier this year.
The parent ‘National Treasure’ film followed the adventures of a treasure hunter and cryptographer Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage), who goes in search of a secret location containing a massive stockpile of hidden treasure with the help of a coded map.
