There was a time when we used to see innovative ideas, concepts which were not really accessible to the rest of the world. But, recently the pattern of making repetitive commercial movies can be seen in Hollywood. It is much safer to say that they are prioritising quantity over quality.
The whole industry is focusing on movies which appeal to the masses, and the creative liberty is shutting down with each passing moment.
Movies like “Ava”, “Red Notice” and “Empire State”, which have no concrete storyline but have action packed moments, which will make the audience cheer for the hero, basically the adrenaline rush is only present.
Apart from all these movies, the back to back superhero, and sci-fi adaptations are saturating the market. If we focus on MCU’s spin offs and character based series, then apart from Loki nothing stood out that much, but still there ain’t no sign of stopping.
In a recent interview with Jessica Lange, she rightly pointed out this growing problem, and expressed her disappointment.
According to her, “ We’re living in a corporate world, and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry”.
Talking about the new age technology which is being used in the movie she said ,“I remember sitting on a film set waiting for hours for the cinematographer to get the lighting right, and it was worth it because the result was spectacular. But that’s changed,Cameramen don’t light anymore; they’re shooting on digital. You’re not going to watch dailies. It’s a different ball game.”
We have always separated the art and the artist, and movies like “Suspiria”, “Pearl” and “Last Night In Soho” prove that, the art ain’t dying, but amidst the crowd of mediocrity, we can’t afford to lose such gems.
