Things may seem hunky-dory for the director duo Raj and DK with the success of their Amazon Prime Video show, The Family Man, now. But their film career progress (except for the success of Go Goa Gone and Stree) didn’t give them much hope a few years before the show.
Speaking with Binged.com, Raj and DK revealed how waiting for the evolution of the digital platform and choosing the right story for a web audience helped them reap rich dividends:
“We’ve been watching international series for long, even before OTT platforms took off in India. And while we were readying the story of The Family Man, we had realised it needed a wider canvas than a film medium. It deserved to be made into a series. While we were waiting for the right platform to take it forward, Amazon Prime Video helped us in our cause,”
The writing process was the most difficult for them:
” Web series, no doubt, lets you explore more but it comes with its own set of challenges. The structure of the series needs to be well-defined, the subplots need to be in place. It is important to maintain consistency in the graph of diverse characters. The absence of censorship was a boon for us because it offered us the freedom to look deeply into the subject,”
Many industry friends and well-wishers had told the director duo that their films were good, but far ahead of the times they live in:
“In many ways, OTT has helped us come out of the rut. Earlier books were the most personal medium to tell stories, but OTT has replaced that space now. In the case of The Family Man, choosing local actors and new faces was an advantage too,”
The second season will be an acid test for the directors’ credibility, but the two look well geared to handle the challenges that lie ahead.
