Next week, a Malayalam comedy-drama is releasing directly for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. While the quality of Mollywood releases for streaming has been steadily going up for the past few months, Disney+ Hotstar has been having a tough time so far, with their Malayalam premieres. So the OTT platform will be hoping that this upcoming feature, Lalitham Sundaram, will be doing better than its previous Malayalam digital releases. But before the Biju Menon – Manju Warrier starrer drops for streaming on Hotstar, let us rank the other direct-to-OTT released Malayalam features in terms of “view-worthiness”:
Kesu Ee Veedinte Nadhan
This Dileep-Urvashi starrer is the worst direct-to-released Malayalam movie out of the three films on this list (and possibly in 2021 as well). While both the film leads, Dileep and Urvashi made the film better by their presence and the story’s initial premise made the movie a little interesting – the end product was worthless. Plus, the lead actor’s off-screen controversies didn’t help with the movie’s reception either.
Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham
Disney+ Hotstar’s first Malayalam OTT premiere had potential but lost steam halfway through. An ensemble cast led by Malayalam superstar, Nivin Pauly, did sound exciting, but the film’s absurd satire comedy failed to garner much besides a few laughs here and there.
Bro Daddy
The winner by default. Well, Bro Daddy isn’t exactly bad… but it isn’t all that good either. Mohanlal and Lalu Alex were pretty good in the film (especially the latter), but the movie’s weak script held it back. Still, this movie is probably the only Malayalam movie out of this list that is worth a watch.
Lalitham Sundaram will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on March 18th 2022.
