Netflix had announced a delectable slate of 41 Indian Originals back in March. One of those 41 is an anthology series titled ‘Ray’ – a series that will pay homage to auteur Satyajit Ray’s remarkable skills as a storyteller. Ray will offer a contemporary take on four compelling short stories from Satyajit Da’s rich repertoire of short stories. Netflix today released an interesting first look at the anthology, along with the titles of the four short films that will make up Ray. Most significantly, Netflix announced the release date for Ray. The series will premiere on Netflix India on 25th June, just a month away from today.
The anthology features four short films by celebrated filmmakers – one each by Abhishek Chaubey (Ishqiya, Udta Punjab) and Vasan Bala (Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota); and two by Bengali filmmaker, Srijit Mukherji (Dwitiyo Purush, Begum Jaan). Each short film will be around one hour long. The ensemble cast of Ray is sprawling and stellar – including actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Gajraj Rao, Radhika Madan, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Ali Fazal, Kay Kay Menon and Shweta Basu Prasad.
Srijit Mukherji has directed two short films in Ray. The first short film stars Kay Kay Menon, Bidita Bag and Rajesh Sharma in the lead. It is titled ‘Bahrupiya’. Mukherji’s second film is titled ‘Forget Me Not’. He has roped in Ali Fazal and Shweta Basu Prasad to star as its leads.
Abhishek Chaubey’s short film features Manoj Bajpayee and Gajraj Rao. It is interestingly titled, ‘Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa’. Vasan Bala’s short film is titled ‘Spotlight’. It features Radhika Madan and Harshvardhan Kapoor as leads.
Ray is a joint effort from Netflix and Viacom 18. The two content giants have earlier collaborated on Jamtara – Sabka Number Aayega, She, and Taj Mahal 1989. Ray has been mounted on a lavish scale, and will be a terrific watch for sure.
