Rawson Marshall Thurber is currently an in-demand filmmaker in Hollywood. And the reason is apparent. His last directorial – the heist flick ‘Red Notice’ starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, had become the most-watched English film on Netflix. It still holds the top spot with a massive 364 million hours of first-month viewing and is ahead of the likes of ‘Don’t Look Up’, ‘Extraction’, and ‘Bird Box’.
And it is now being reported (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Rawson Marshall Thurber has been roped in to co-write and direct a live-action feature film version of the globally popular animated series Voltron’. Considering the source material and Thurber’s involvement, the potential blockbuster has resulted in a bidding war between reputed studios like Warner Bros., Universal, and Amazon Prime Video.
‘Voltron’ mech anime series revolved around a group of five young space explorers from the Robot Lions battalion who control the titular giant robot called ‘Voltron’. The show’s first season aired in the years 1984 and 1985 and was adapted from the Japanese super robot anime series ‘Beast King GoLion’. Years later, a ‘Voltron’ reboot series titled ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ was released by Netflix from 2016 to 2018.
Talks about a live-action ‘Voltron’ film have existed since way back in the year 2005 by Grey’s Anatomy producer Mark Gordon. There was renewed interest in the project back then after the astounding success of a similarly themed movie – Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers’. However, things apparently didn’t move forward at that time.
After ‘Red Notice’, the 47-year-old filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber is expected to direct an episode of the yet-untitled Dungeons & Dragons series, a pandemic themed sci-fi action film ‘The Division’ starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, and perhaps a sequel to the 2013 crime comedy film ‘We’re the Millers’.
