15th August 2024, Friday was marked as the 78th Independence Day for India. The Independence celebration on the day was not just limited to the Red Fort, but also on the silver screen. The Indian Film Industry saw the release of multiple big films on the day.
Bollywood lined up three movies for the day that included Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa. Whereas multiple names were released (including several big names) in the regional languages (more prominently southern languages). The question remains as to which industry dominated the day- national or regional?
The Bollywood industry saw many records being broken with the release of Stree 2. The movie entered the 100 crore club in just 2 days of release. The movie prior to its release itself had been one of the favourites for this year, and the results too don’t lie about it.
Apart from Stree 2 though, the other two films could not lay a good impact on the box office with less than 20 crores collected in the first two days. It is even more disappointing for Khel Khel Mein due to the big names associated with the movie. Vedaa seems decent, considering its expectations, but still it fails to create an impact.
The regional cinema too has just been on a decent spot. With Thangalaan becoming a worldwide success, and acquiring a collection of 50 crores in 2 days, it became a hope for regional cinema. Other than that the Telugu movies Double iSmart and Mr. Bacchan saw decent openings, but failed miserably on the second day. There have been other movies as well but they are not worth mentioning due to their negligible impact on the box office. Raghu Thatha, disappointed fans who had high hopes for the movie after the release of the trailer.
In a concluding remark, both the national and regional cinema saw similar treatment with movies that were released on 15th August. Apart from one or two movies, rest all have been either average or complete failures.
But the magnificent response of Stree 2, makes it clear that National cinema indeed had a better result on the day. Although the top 5 high grossing movies of the day had only Stree 2 as a Hindi movie, the difference the movie has in collection can not be overcome even after adding up all the others.
