Last year, it was revealed that three classic Bollywood films from the 1970s period namely ‘Mili’, ‘Bawarchi’, and ‘Koshish’ were getting their remakes. And as per the latest update, the ‘Bawarchi’ remake has just got a director.
The modern-day adaptation of the endearing comedy drama movie ‘Bawarchi’ will be directed by filmmaker Anushree Mehta, who had directed the Zee5 action-comedy film ‘Mrs. Undercover’ starring Radhika Apte in the lead role. ‘Bawarchi’ was released back in the year 1972 and it was helmed by legendary filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Director – Anand, Chupke Chupke, Gol Maal, Abhimaan).
The underlying story of ‘Bawarchi’ centers around a dysfunctional family, who are overjoyed when they are suddenly visited by a charming, mysterious but highly efficient cook (played by Rajesh Khanna). How the cook changes the lives of the family members and reunites them forms the film’s crux. Besides Rajesh Khanna in the lead role, ‘Bawarchi’ also featured Jaya Bachchan, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Asrani, and A.K. Hangal, amongst others.
‘Bawarchi’ turned out to be a commercially and critically successful film which has gained a cult following over the years. And that’s the reason fans of the 1972 film are rather skeptical about the remake. So, Anushree Mehta will have very big shoes to fill.
Some of you might not be aware that ‘Bawarchi’ was actually a remake of Tapan Sinha’s 1966 Bengali movie ‘Galpo Holeo Satti’. This is not the first time the subject is getting a remake. Because previously, there have also been Tamil and Kannada versions of the same story. Moreover, Govinda’s hit 90s film ‘Hero No.1’ was heavily inspired by ‘Bawarchi’.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the makers of the ‘Bawarchi’ remake will do justice to the source material. A lot would also depend on the film’s casting, especially the lead actor’s role which was essayed by Rajesh Khanna in the 1972 film. That must be spot-on. It’s not that Hindi film remakes have not done well in the past. Some successful examples are ‘Don’, ‘Devdas’ and ‘Agnipath’. But like we said, it has to be done right.
