The Italians beat the English for the Euros 2020 trophy, while Argentina finally won their first Copa America since 1993, beating the Brazil national team in Brazil. And now, the “mother of all sporting tournaments” – The Summer Olympics is starting up again and it will begin in two days. The Summer Olympics which will take place in Japan got postponed to 2021 from its earlier 2020 release date, due to the Global Coronavirus Pandemic. When this postponement happened – The Tokyo Summer Olympics became the first Summer Olympics to be postponed and rescheduled (rather than being completely cancelled). The global event will take place for two weeks between the months of July and August, starting this Friday.
The Tokyo Olympics has been facing a tough time so far – marred with scandals, be it for the bribery allegations, sexist comments, different countries’ problems with Japan’s Rising Sun flag or logo plagiarism. The tournament has also had multiple athletes boycotting the event, primarily due to the coronavirus safety issues. Although the Tokyo 2020 chief, Toshiro Muto does not rule out a last minute cancellation of the tournament, the JOC AKA the Japanese Olympic Committee is still committed to the opening of the Olympic games for now. There have been loads of stadiums built, including Japan’s new National Stadium, where the main opening event is likely to take place.
Since International spectators will be banned from attending the Tokyo Olympics, it has become even more necessary to have a subscription with SonyLIV to watch the sporting events live. Then again, nearly 600,000 Olympic tickets and another 300,000 Paralympic tickets have been purchased by overseas residents; it makes sense that this Olympics will bar the International non-participants from coming into the country.
However, the Olympics could become a Global Super-event (according to medical experts). This tournament could end up being a crazy breeding ground for the Covid-19 virus which could end up spreading to other participants and then the athletes will end up being virus-carriers themselves. And this is discounting the near-one million International ticket holders now barred International audience. So don’t be surprised if the Tokyo Summer Olympics gets cancelled again.
The 2020 Summer Olympics will stream on SonyLIV. It starts in two days, on 23rd July 2021 and it will go on till 8th August 2021. There will be 11,091 athletes expected to feature in the tournament with over 206 nations participating in 339 events within 33 different sports (50 disciplines in total).
The 2020 Summer Paralympics will also stream on SonyLIV from 24th August till 5th September 2021.
