Everyone has probably heard of the newest hit malayalam film, “Manjummel Boys”. The survival thriller, which is based on a true incident that took place in 2006 at the infamous Guna Caves in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, unravels the horrific story of a group of friends exploring the place, which is also known as the Devil’s Kitchen. In the process of wanting to leave an everlasting mark of their group and friendship on the rocks, tragedy takes over when one of them ends up falling into a deep hole. The movie then follows the fate of their friend, as well as the group.
Since its release on February 22 2024, the film directed by Chidambaram and boasting a stellar cast of Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese and so on has plunged into remarkable success by surpassing the ₹75 crore global box office collection within 10 days. Beyond this, it has also received critical recognition thereby cementing it as the second biggest blockbuster in the Malayalam industry in 2024.
What is interesting to note, however, is the gain in popularity for the 1991 hit Kamal Hassan flick, Guna. Throughout the movie, we see evident and lovely callbacks to the film. The usage of the popular song, “Kanmani Anbodu” from Gunaa in Manjummel Boys is truly an enchanting moment, as it shows that love in friendships is just as important. As Manjummel Boys gains traction in Tamil Nadu as well, Guna is getting its well deserved reminiscent importance, where Kamal Hassan plays a mentally ill individual who escapes to a world of his own fantasy. As you experience Manjummel Boys, make sure to also watch Guna, and immerse yourself in the magnificent yet eerie greatness of the Devil’s Kitchen, which is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Aha Video, as well as Youtube.
