Richard Linklater is ready to direct a sequel for the 2003 hit comedy, School of Rock, which starred Jack Black as the energetic but unlucky guitarist slacker, Dewey Finn, who unexpectedly gets the opportunity to become a substitute teacher at the prestigious Horace Green prep school. After recognising the musical talents of his students, Dewey decides to compete in the popular “Battle of the Bands” with his new band of fourth-graders.
In his recent interview with UNILAD Exclusive, Linklater talked about a possible “School of Rock” sequel. However, the director won’t do it unless there’s a good idea.
“Sure, it has been a long time. There was talk of it years ago but I’d love to work with Jack again. But there’s got to be a reason. There’s got to be something. Don’t do it unless there’s an idea, the reason we did two Before’s is there was a good idea screaming out, there’s something to express about this.”
The sequel definitely needs a good idea to move forward. The original movie’s charm lies in its innovative story and Black’s outstanding performance. Relying solely on nostalgia for the success of the sequel could backfire.
Plus, more than two decades have passed since the first film premiered. Linklater’s good idea for the sequel could explore how the characters have grown and changed. What is Dewey doing? Is he still rocking out with a band? Or has he changed his life’s path?
The storyline for a “School of Rock” sequel has to strike a balance between originality and nostalgia. It needs to offer a compelling story that keeps the audience engaged while staying true to the spirit of the original film. Stay tuned for more updates.
