After directing his last two feature films namely the Matt Damon starrer historical drama ‘The Last Duel’ and the biographical crime film ‘House of Gucci’ starring Lady Gaga, veteran filmmaker Ridley Scott’s forthcoming project would be the historical drama movie ‘Napoleon’ for the Apple TV Plus OTT platform. But the film is ostensibly out of the Oscar 2023 race.
You might be wondering why such a premium Apple TV Plus project helmed by a filmmaker of Ridley Scott’s calibre (Alien, Gladiator, Blade Runner, Body of Lies) is no longer a contender for the Oscar 2023 race. The reason is that previously Apple TV+ was eyeing a possible 2022 release for ‘Napoleon’. However, as per the latest buzz, the OTT giant is now expected to release the biopic film sometime in the year 2023, thereby obviously rendering it ineligible for competing at the Oscar 2023 awards. In case that indeed happens, Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ will certainly be a strong contender for Oscar 2024.
The Apple TV+ film ‘Napoleon’ is based on the French military and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte, his rise to power, and his turbulent relationship with his wife Josephine. The film will reunite Ridley Scott with former collaborator and Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix as the French military and political leader Napoleon alongside Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby as Napoleon’s love interest and better half Empress Josephine.
Besides Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, ‘Napoleon’ also features well-known French actor Tahar Rahim. Other than ‘Napoleon’, Apple TV+’s upcoming 2023 films include Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Argylle’, Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Emancipation’, and Dexter Fletcher’s romantic action-adventure movie ‘Ghosted’, amongst others. Meanwhile, stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on Ridley Scott’s next directorial film for Apple TV+ ‘Napoleon’.
