Multiple small budget films have been lost in the abyss of big-name/ big-budget films over decades of cinema. The movie may even be good, but due to the lack of (any proper) marketing or the usage of relatively unknown actors hampered the film’s chances of being accepted by theatres. And one such film was 2018’s Malayalam romantic drama ‘Randuper’. But thanks to the rise of OTT platforms in India, the film managed to release on multiple streaming platforms, yesterday.
‘Randuper’ was a film that was shot in Bangalore back in 2016. The movie managed to get screened at the International Competition category of the 22nd International Film Festival of Kerala in 2017. But the film had trouble releasing in mainstream theatres for a long time. First-time film director, Prem Sankar, figured that his career ended as soon as it had started with this film. But fortunately for him, one of the few good things that managed to happen during the coronavirus pandemic is the sudden rise in OTT platforms. And with that, many OTT platforms are eager for content, with many aiming for Malayalam films due to their current popularity.
It has been five years since the movie was shot, but the themes and the story still resonate with the current audience. The film gives a take on relationships, gender politics within a relationship and the dynamics of each partner in the relationship – all of which have never been deeply explored in Malayalam cinema. Which makes this film’s release quite exciting.
Check out ‘Randuper’ on Nee Stream, Cave, Saina Play and Koode. The movie released on these platforms yesterday, on 9th July 2021.
