The great Robert Downey Jr has disclosed how he was chosen to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The one and only on-screen Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, dropped fans’ jaws onto the floor in shock after he came out as the MCU’s Doctor Doom at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event. Many believed that the Academy-Award-winning actor retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good after Avengers: Endgame. Now, RDJ is all set to appear as Victor Von Doom, a character so universally loved and substantially different from Tony Stark in terms of characteristics and persona.
In a recent appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, RDJ talked in detail about his shocking but welcoming return to the MCU and how he managed to get his hands on the role of Doctor Doom. The actor revealed that he had been in touch with Kevin Feige and The Russo Brothers for over a year. He discussed several ideas with them about how he could be of service to the MCU after his Iron Man era.
“Susan [Downey Jr’s wife] and I were sitting down with Feige at one point and he said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back…’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’ Then we both realised over time that it was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy, a very sophisticated creative thinker, about how can we not go backwards, how can we not disappoint expectations, how we can continue to beat expectations? And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked up this character and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.’”
The fact that Downey Jr remained in touch with Feige and The Russo Brothers for over a year shows that Marvel lost faith in Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror a long time ago. Kang was supposed to be the next big baddie after Thanos, who served as the ultimate antagonist of the MCU’s Infinity Saga. Kang was supposed to do the same for the franchise’s Multiverse Saga. But the critical and commercial failure of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Majors’ personal life struggles and arrest forced Marvel Studios to pivot from Kang.
The stakes are higher than ever for the MCU, as Doctor Doom’s live-action adaptations have a bad history. The character is not just any ordinary comic book villain. In fact, Doom is one of the most iconic villains in comic book history. His intelligence, power, and ambition make him a formidable foe for the Avengers. Whether Robert Downey Jr can effectively embody the character of Doctor Doom remains uncertain, considering the significant differences between Victor Von Doom and Tony Stark. Let’s see what happens.
