Celebrated filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock’s cult psychological thriller movie ‘Vertigo’, which came out in 1958, is finally getting a remake. And not just that, the actor who is set to star in the remake is none other than the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ star Robert Downey Jr., who will also co-produce the movie (via Deadline). The remake rights for ‘Vertigo’ have been acquired by Paramount Pictures. The screenplay for the ‘Vertigo’ remake will be penned by Steven Knight (of ‘Peaky Blinders’ fame), who was recently roped in to lend his writing skills for a new ‘Star Wars’ movie.
Helmed by the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, the parent film ‘Vertigo’ follows a police detective (James Stewart), who develops a fear of heights and Vertigo, after another cop dies during a rooftop chase. He later retires and is subsequently hired by his college acquaintance to follow his spouse, quoting her questionable mental state. But apparently, there is more to the case than meets the eye. The film was based on the 1954 French novel D’entre les morts (From Among the Dead).
‘Vertigo’ is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. It’s got 92% critics score on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes and finds a place amongst the top 100 movies of all time on IMDb. Also, many of you might not be aware that a 1965 Tamil language Indian film titled ‘Kalangarai Vilakkam’ was based on ‘Vertigo’.
In the modern ‘Vertigo’ reboot, Robert Downey Jr. will essay the lead role of the protagonist detective, which was played by James Stewart in the original film. With such a big star attached to lead the remake, it would now be interesting to know which filmmaker will be approached by the makers to direct the highly anticipated project. Whoever it is, he or she’ll have pretty big shoes to fill.
Robert Downey Jr. has had a stellar career with several ups and downs. Besides starring as Tony Stark / Iron Man in the MCU movies, the charismatic Oscar-nominated actor has featured in films such as Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’, David Fincher’s ‘Zodiac’, Richard Attenborough’s ‘Chaplin’, and Ben Stiller’s ‘Tropic Thunder’, to name a few. He would next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s World War-II film ‘Oppenheimer’. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on the ‘Vertigo’ remake.
