R. Madhavan’s directorial debut ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ was released in theatres on 1st July a few weeks after receiving standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite its insipid box-office response, the film has been consistently garnering critical acclaim from many quarters.
Soon after its theatrical release, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ had made its way to IMDb’s highest rated Indian movies of all time, thereby outranking acclaimed Indian films such as ‘RRR’, ‘Major’, and ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, etc. At that time, Rocketry was on 142nd rank on the coveted IMDb list.
In less than a month since its theatrical release, the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam versions of Rocketry started streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform from 26th July. While the Hindi version of the movie has been made available on Voot Select from today, that is, 29th July.
And interestingly, after the OTT release of ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, the film’s IMDb rank has dramatically improved by leaps and bounds. From its earlier 142nd rank, Rocketry currently holds a highly impressive 6th rank on IMDb’s top 250 Indian movies list. Presently, the film boasts of a rare 9.2 IMDb user rating.
And in doing that, Rocketry has outranked any Indian films like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Soorarai Pottru’, ‘Dangal’, ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’, ‘Drishyam 2’, and ‘Sardar Udham’, to name a few, on IMDb’s top 250 Indian movies list.
The probable reason for the phenomenal rise in the IMDb rank for ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ might be that after its OTT release on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service and today, on Voot Select, a greater number of viewers must have watched the film and thereafter rated it positively on IMDb. Because considering the movie’s sadly underwhelming theatrical footfall, not many might have seen it before its OTT release.

Madhavan, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is a biographical drama which is based on the life of former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of selling confidential information to foreign entities and how he eventually fought back. ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ also features Simran (as Meera Narayanan), Rajit Kapur (as Vikram Sarabhai), and Gulshan Grover (as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam) besides special appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya.
