Last month, it was announced that India’s official entry to Oscars 2023 would be Pan Nalin’s coming-of-age drama ‘Chhello Show’ aka ‘Last Film Show’ in the ‘Best International Film’ category. The news left myriad fans of S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ heartbroken and disappointed. However, ‘RRR’ was never out of the Oscar race as it was eligible for getting nominated in other (albeit more competitive) categories including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor’, etc.
And now, ‘RRR‘ has officially kicked off its FYC (For Your Consideration) Awards / Oscar 2023 campaign in all major categories including Best Motion Picture, Director (S.S. Rajamouli), Actor (Jr. NTR & Ram Charan), Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Original Song, Score, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, Visual Effects, etc.
In case ‘RRR’ gets nominated at the Oscars in any of the aforementioned categories, it is expected to compete with some top-notch potential contenders like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘The Batman’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘The Whale’, and ‘Elvis’, to name a few.
And, hypothetically, if ‘RRR’ is able to somehow outdo all these Hollywood biggies to win the ‘Best Picture’ Academy Award, it would achieve the rare distinction of becoming the second non-English language film to be able to do that. The first ever movie to achieve this incredible feat was Bong Joon-ho’s South Korean dark comedy thriller ‘Parasite’.
Now the question is: Can ‘RRR’ repeat what ‘Parasite’ did at the Oscars? There is not even an iota of doubt that the chances of an Indian film bagging an Oscar are brighter than ever (After ‘Lagaan’ probably). As per a recent Oscar prediction report by reputed entertainment portal Variety, ‘RRR’ is amongst the top-tier contenders for the ‘Best Picture’ category for the Oscar 2023 race.
Some time back, the action extravaganza had achieved the rare feat of acquiring the ‘Certified Fresh’ status on the reviews’ aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Later, ‘RRR’ was designated as ‘Must-See’ on Metacritic – yet another rare achievement, especially for an Indian film. And the film’s incessant appreciation from the foreign film fraternity, particularly from US-based audiences, continues till date in a never-seen-before way.
So yes, our Indian movie ‘RRR’ has a really good chance of getting nominated and even winning its first ever Oscar award. Let’s see if all the crazy love and cult following for S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ amongst Indian and American audiences gets converted into an Indian movie’s first ever Oscar win.
