After the theatrical release of S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ in March this year, and more so after it started streaming globally on the Netflix OTT platform, the period action extravaganza has inarguably garnered an unprecedented response from audiences and critics across the globe.
Some time back, the action extravaganza had achieved the rare feat of acquiring the ‘Certified Fresh’ status on the reviews’ aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Later, ‘RRR’ was designated as ‘Must-See’ on Metacritic – yet another rare achievement, especially for an Indian film. And the film’s incessant appreciation from the foreign film fraternity, particularly from US-based audiences, continues till date in a never-seen-before way.
Moreover, ‘RRR’ has also become a strong contender for the upcoming Oscars. As per the latest Oscar prediction report by reputed entertainment portal Variety, ‘RRR’ is amongst the top-tier contenders for the ‘Best Picture’ category for the Oscar 2023 race.
A few months back, ‘RRR’ bagged the ‘Best Picture’ mid-season runner-up award at the Hollywood Critics Association, a well-known LA-based film critic organization. For the coveted HCA trophy, ‘RRR’ managed to beat Hollywood biggies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘The Batman’, and ‘Elvis’, but the winning film was the multiverse actioner ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
With ‘RRR’ as a formidable Oscar contender, the chances of an Indian film winning the ‘Best Picture’ Oscar Award, or at least getting nominated, never looked brighter than now. The last Indian film to get an Oscar nomination was Ashutosh Gowariker’s period sports drama ‘Lagaan’ starring Aamir Khan. That was 21 years ago.
‘RRR’ helmer S.S Rajamouli has understood the film’s potential at the Oscars 2023 race. The talented filmmaker is busy making his presence felt in the international film circuit like the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and LA’s Beyond Fest genre film festival in the US.
Having said that, campaigning for Oscars is an expensive affair. Let’s see how far the ‘RRR’ team is willing to go to promote their film for the 95th Academy Awards. Plus, ‘RRR’ would have to compete with top-notch potential contenders like ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, and ‘The Whale’, etc. But anything can happen. ‘RRR’ is currently streaming on Netflix, Zee5, and Disney+ Hotstar in India and in the US and other regions on the Netflix OTT platform.
